Charles "Lucky" Luciano (1897-1962) was an Italian-American gangster and a key figure in the development of organized crime in the United States:
Early life
Born Salvatore Lucania in Sicily, Luciano's family moved to New York City when he was ten years old. He started his criminal career in the Five Points Gang and worked his way up to become one of the most powerful mob bosses in history.
The Commission
In 1931, Luciano established the Commission, which is considered the beginning of the Italian-American Mafia. He also became the first official boss of the Genovese crime family.
The heroin trade
Luciano is considered the mastermind behind the expansion of the international heroin trade after World War II.
The Godfather
Luciano served as the model for the character Don Corleone in The Godfather (1972).
Downfall
Luciano was arrested in 1936 while vacationing in Hot Springs, Arkansas.
Legacy
Time magazine named Luciano one of the 20 most influential people of the 20th century.
